Cookie Policy

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files of letters and numbers that are placed on your computer, tablet or smartphone, by websites that you visit. They are widely used in order to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site, for example, remembering your preferences, recording what you have put in your shopping basket, and counting the number of people looking at a website. We use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a functional website and to give you a more personalised service.

Who sets the cookies?

We use both first and third party cookies:

  • First party cookies are cookies that are set by us (as the owner of the website). They help the website to function as you as the user might expect it to. They are also used to provide us with anonymised data about how our website is being used.
  • Third party cookies are set on our website by an organisation other than us. These enable us to learn more about our customers, so that we can provide a more personalised service, or for the purposes of advertising.

There are many different types of cookie. They are each used for different purposes. The reasons for the 1851 Trust using different types of cookies are described below.

Why do we use cookies?

A visit to a page on the 1851 Trust website, may generate the following types of cookie:

  • Strictly necessary cookies. These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Without these cookies services you have asked for, like shopping baskets or e-billing, cannot be provided.
  • Analytical/performance cookies. These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. These cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how a website works.
  •  Functionality cookies. These cookies allow the website to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. For instance, a website may be able to provide you with local weather reports or traffic news by storing in a cookie the region in which you are currently located. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for such as a live chat session. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.
  • Targeting cookies. These cookies are used to deliver adverts more relevant to you and your interests. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement as well as help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaign. They are usually placed by advertising networks with the website operator’s permission. They remember that you have visited a website and this information is shared with other organisations such as advertisers. Quite often targeting or advertising cookies will be linked to site functionality provided by the other organisation.
  • Other third party cookies. Where we use applications on our website that are owned by other organisations, third party cookies may be used to customise that application to you or to track the success of that application. For example, if you share an article using a social media sharing button, the social media network may record that share.

Which third party cookies do we use?

We use third party cookies for the purposes of functionality (plugins) and anlaytics. The below table outlines the purpose of each of our current third party cookies and gives links to the privacy policies of each third party. (Please note the third party cookies used may change as we work with new or different suppliers – this list will be reviewed and updated monthly).
