Next Generation Roadshow London

Following hugely successful events in Portsmouth and the North East, the 1851 Trust’s #NextGeneration Roadshow visited London this week.

The two action-packed days at Merchant Taylors’ School offered 221 school pupils a stimulating day applying real-life examples of the challenges that Sir Ben Ainslie’s British America’s Cup team faces in its challenge to bring the Cup home.

Once again, the day was a huge success with very positive feedback. Here are just some of the comments from pupils and teachers:

Today has been perfect for our year 9s as we are currently doing a project back at school which has the America’s Cup team as the context, expanding on the Trust’s teaching resource BT STEM Crew. We can take what we have learnt today and apply it in our lessons back in the classroom. All our pupils have really enjoyed today, it has been really engaging, I have certainly learnt a lot myself too! I would love to pursue sailing for the pupils once we get back to school. There have been plenty of memories made today, we will certainly remember it for years to come.”

“I am really pleased we came today, the kids have had a wonderful time, they have really enjoyed the on-the-water activities. I will certainly be looking into clubs where they can continue to get involved with sailing because of today.”

“Today was fun! I enjoyed the watersports and all the talks in the classroom were interesting. I learnt how they built the America’s Cup boats. Today has opened my eyes to the opportunities there are out there for me.”

“It has been the best day ever! I have never been on the water before, but I have found a new hobby which I want to do next weekend. Today has allowed me to believe I can pursue a career in STEM.”

“It was very exciting and fun, filled with action. The best part was going in the canoes on the lakes, I would like to come again. Today has definitely inspired me to take up STEM – perhaps I could be an engineer!”

The next stop of the #NextGeneration Roadshow is Edinburgh followed by Nottingham and Birmingham. The Roadshows have been made possible by the generous support of Lloyd’s Register Foundation and funding from The Goldsmiths’ Company, Merchant Taylors’ Company, Benoy Foundation and the Little Britain Challenge Cup.
